Rock Tech Lithium Advances Ontario Refinery Plans

Rock Tech Lithium (RCKTF) advances its plans to establish a lithium conversion refinery in Red Rock, Northwestern Ontario. The company unveiled details from its engineering scoping study on September 19, demonstrating the project’s economic viability and operational feasibility.

Lithium Refinery Development in Ontario

The Township of Red Rock, at the former Norampac mill site, is chosen as the preferred location for the refinery. This site is strategically situated northeast of Thunder Bay on Lake Superior’s north shore. Rock Tech holds the Georgia Lake deposit north of Red Rock and collaborates with the Red Rock Indian Band and BMI to prepare the site.

Project Details and Economic Impact

The proposed $2.3 billion facility plans to convert spodumene concentrate from Georgia Lake into lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide monohydrate. This plant aims to produce up to 32,000 lithium carbonate equivalent annually and operates for approximately 25 years. Moreover, Rock Tech sees this facility as a regional processing hub for additional lithium deposits in development.

Financial Considerations and Progress

Currently, Rock Tech is seeking $1.6 billion in financing to build the refinery and has not yet confirmed a construction timeline. If successful, this would be the company’s second refinery, following its ongoing project in Guben, Germany, which benefits from substantial government grants.

Potential and Challenges

Rock Tech is among four prominent lithium players in Northwestern Ontario, each with plans to build processing plants. The possibility of one central processing hub is being considered to serve all these projects. Notably, Rock Tech estimates a significant transfer of engineering expertise from its Guben project to the proposed Ontario facility, offering cost and time efficiencies.
