Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. (PCRFY) and Mazda Motor Corporation have begun preparations to supply next-generation cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for Mazda’s battery electric vehicles (BEVs). These vehicles are scheduled for introduction from 2027 onwards.
Market Expansion and Strategic Partnership
Both companies have decided to expand their medium- to long-term partnership. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has approved a joint project aimed at expanding battery production and technology development. This is part of a broader plan to secure a stable battery supply.
Mazda’s Electrification Roadmap
Mazda has divided its roadmap into three phases, focusing on increasing electric vehicle production to align with market shifts and customer demands. A new BEV model based on its first dedicated EV platform will be introduced by 2027.
Production Capacity Increase
In response to growing needs, Panasonic Energy plans to boost its production capacity. Starting in 2027, cylindrical lithium-ion batteries will be manufactured at its Suminoe and Kaizuka factories in Osaka, with an annual domestic production capacity of 10GWh targeted by 2030.
Supporting Japan’s Carbon Neutrality Goals
Storage batteries are part of Japan’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Through this collaboration, Panasonic Energy and Mazda aim to bolster the domestic supply chains for cylindrical automotive lithium-ion batteries, reinforcing Japan’s industrial competitiveness.
Collaborative Efforts for Sustainability
Panasonic Energy and Mazda will persist in addressing global challenges like global warming mitigation, promoting growth within the automotive and battery industries, and fostering local employment and talent development.
