Northern Graphite Comments on U.S. Tariffs on Graphite from China

Northern Graphite Corporation (TSXV: NGC) (OTCQB: NGPHF) (FSE: 0NG) (XSTU: 0NG) has announced its opinion on the Biden Administration’s new 25 percent tariff on natural graphite imports from China, which begins in 2026. The company believes this move will strengthen North America’s graphite industry.

Biden Administration Supports North American Graphite Industry

Northern’s CEO, Hugues Jacquemin, stated, “This is an important move by the Biden Administration and the United States Trade Representative to support the North American graphite industry. We look forward to discussions with the White House about what else can be done to ensure an independent domestic graphite supply chain.”

Tariffs Aim to Boost Local Graphite Competitiveness

This tariff ruling aims to make local natural graphite companies more cost-competitive with China, enhancing North American supply chain security. It follows a decision from May 3 granting OEMs a two-year period to transition their Battery Anode Material (BAM) sourcing from China to North America. The Administration’s decision requires OEMs to commit to offtake agreements with North American producers to continue qualifying for a US$7,500 tax credit after the two-year exemption expiring at the end of 2026.

Lac des Iles Mine Expansion

In January, Northern announced an updated mineral resource estimate at its Lac des Iles mine. This update may extend the mine’s life by approximately eight years. The final details will be confirmed later in 2024 through a revised mineral reserve estimate and life-of-mine plan.

CEO Jacquemin added, “This ruling benefits our efforts to extend the life and production capacity at our Lac des Iles mine in Quebec.” He highlighted Northern’s commitment to becoming a key graphite supplier to industrial customers and Lithium-Ion battery makers, emphasizing the shift from Chinese to local production.

About Northern Graphite

Northern Graphite is the only flake graphite producing company in North America and is listed on the TSX Venture Exchange. The Canadian company aims to be a leading producer of natural graphite and high-value products critical to the green economy, including anode material for lithium-ion batteries/EVs, fuel cells, and graphene.

Northern expects to be a major natural graphite producer outside of China with the upcoming restart of its Namibian operations. It also manages large-scale projects such as Bissett Creek in Ontario and additional resources in Namibia and the Mousseau property in Quebec. These projects emphasize high-quality battery-grade graphite and are supported by well-established infrastructure in politically stable locations.
