Thunder Bay Lithium Refinery Set to Boost Regional Economy

Avalon Advanced Materials (AVL) is advocating for the establishment of a lithium refinery in Thunder Bay. The Toronto-based lithium company has been actively highlighting the potential economic benefits the project could bring to the city and surrounding areas.

Avalon’s recent report illustrates a significant economic multiplier effect in the community, with positive impacts on GDP, employment, and local businesses. The refinery is projected to employ 128 workers, opening opportunities for millwrights, mechanics, electricians, metallurgical engineers, and process operators.

Thunder Bay Lithium Refinery Initiative

Avalon plans to commence plant construction in 2027 with operational output expected by 2028. The proposed facility aims to produce 30,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide annually over three decades. Additionally, the company is considering a solar farm installation at the site to enhance sustainability.

Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff supports the project, stating its crucial role in uniting northern resources with southern industrial strength, in line with Premier Doug Ford’s strategy. The project is expected to invigorate the local economy and boost regional involvement in technologies such as electric vehicles.

Avalon’s Strategic Moves

Avalon has acquired a 380-acre former pulp mill property in Thunder Bay’s north end for the refinery location. Near the Manitoba border, the company holds a lithium deposit at Separation Rapids in conjunction with SCR-Sibelco NV, marking further expansion in the region.

Avalon’s initiative aligns well with the Sustainable Jobs Act and the city’s future net-zero workforce ambitions, promising long-term benefits for Thunder Bay and its residents.
