Federal Grant Boosts Chicago’s NanoGraf in Clean Energy Sector

Chicago-based NanoGraf (NNGF) Receives Federal Grant

CHICAGO (CBS) — NanoGraf Corporation, a leading silicon anode battery material company, is set to boost its operations thanks to a significant federal grant. This Chicago-based company, known for developing energy-dense lithium-ion batteries, has been awarded a $60 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Transforming the Rust Belt

The company’s CEO, Francis Wang, mentioned the initiative to transform the ‘Rust Belt’ into the ‘battery belt’. This involves crafting innovative battery materials at their West Town R&D lab, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance clean energy solutions.

Supporting U.S. Defense and EV Sectors

NanoGraf’s batteries, which are lighter and more efficient, are now a part of the Department of Defense’s operations. The company is also spearheading a battery material facility in Flint, Michigan, to produce 2,500 tons of their proprietary silicon material annually, expected to create significant job opportunities.

Impact of the Inflation Reduction Act

The Illinois-based company’s growth will also benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, which allocates $2.6 billion across seven projects, potentially creating 2,700 jobs statewide. While NanoGraf hasn’t received state incentives, its federal funding is set to significantly impact local job markets and technological advancements.

Focus on Enhancing Electric Vehicles

Francis Wang articulated the company’s ambition to extend electric vehicle ranges by 20-30% using their advanced battery technologies. Despite not securing state incentives, NanoGraf continues to lead in innovative solutions within the clean energy landscape.
