OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — A new advancement in battery technology is underway in Oak Ridge. BioLargo Energy Technologies (BLGO) is developing an innovative battery designed to replace traditional lithium-ion models. These conventional batteries often fail in high temperatures, leading to safety hazards, whereas the new molten salt-based batteries operate safely in such conditions.
“There have been a number of fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in New York due to their use in E-Bikes. Our cell won’t face those issues,” stated Randall Moore, President and CEO of BioLargo.
The molten salt must be heated to function, but it is safe, as it is non-flammable. This feature makes it suitable for home power supplies and solar energy systems.
“Our main objective is to provide a battery that ensures safety, usable in homes and factories, and to fulfill an immediate need for safer energy storage,” Moore added.
The company is also expanding its energy initiatives internationally and will mark its collaboration with a Norwegian energy company with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m. at the BioLargo facility in Oak Ridge.
