Walton Digi-Tech Industries Ltd is teaming up with Huawei to produce lithium batteries locally. This initiative marks a significant step for Walton (WALTON) as it taps into the domestic market, which is currently valued at Tk500 crore.
Walton Launches Lithium Battery Manufacturing
Walton is setting up a new lithium battery plant in Gazipur, focusing initially on meeting the demand of telecom towers throughout Bangladesh. The facility aims to produce 80,000 units annually, starting February 2025, covering the demand for the next five years. As telecom companies shift from traditional lead-acid batteries to lithium, the new plant is perfectly timed.
Advantages of Lithium Batteries
Lithium batteries offer a more durable and environmentally friendly option compared to lead-acid batteries. According to Touhidur Rahman, 30% of telecom sites have shifted to lithium batteries, and this number is expected to increase to 50% shortly.
Collaboration with Huawei
Huawei’s advanced energy technology plays a crucial role in this partnership. Walton plans to benefit from Huawei’s expertise to explore new segments like solar power systems and electric vehicles. Huawei Bangladesh CEO Pan Junfeng emphasized their commitment to this joint effort.
Investment and Future Prospects
Walton’s initial investment is estimated at Tk15 crore, with plans to invest Tk100 crore more if local production of battery cells becomes feasible. This venture not only aligns with Walton’s business goals but also supports their commitment to sustainability.
The collaboration highlights the growing importance of renewable energy solutions in Bangladesh, with both Walton and Huawei playing pivotal roles in this energy revolution.
