Lithium Refinery Surge in Africa

Kivumba Mining House (KMH) has entered into a significant development in Zimbabwe. The state-owned company has signed a $310 million deal with British and Chinese investors to construct a 3 million ton per year lithium processing plant at the Sandawana mine in Mberengwa. The facility will operate under a build, operate and transfer agreement, with initial production set at 600,000 tons of lithium concentrate annually within 18 months.

Investment and Development in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe, hosting the world’s largest known lithium deposits, has banned raw lithium exports to promote in-country refinement. This decision has accelerated the establishment of lithium processing plants nationwide. In fact, Premier Africa Minerals (PAM) has announced a $2.5 million investment to expedite the commissioning of lithium mines, including the Zulu project.

In Mozambique, mining company Magnifica has partnered with Deccan, an Indian miner, forming Deccan Gold Mozambique. This joint venture will establish a 100-ton-per-day lithium facility. Meanwhile, Nigeria sees the rise of new processing facilities spearheaded by Chinese companies like Avatar New Energy Materials (ANEM) and Canmax Technology. Avatar launched Nigeria’s largest processing plant in Nasarawa State, while Canmax invested $200 million in another plant.

Future Prospects in Tanzania

Tanzania is preparing for increased processing activities following its announced ban on the export of unrefined lithium by mid-2024. Companies like Titan Lithium Inc. are positioning themselves strategically to tap into these developments. These expansions align with Benchmark Mineral Intelligence’s forecast predicting a tripling of Africa’s lithium production.
