YLB (YLB) has announced that four companies are advancing in the bid to develop pilot lithium extraction plants in Bolivia’s salt flats. China’s CBC, Italy’s Protecno, France’s Eramet, and Australia’s Eau Lithium have been shortlisted based on their technology maturity, financial propositions, and project execution timelines. YLB’s focus is on developing these technologies at the Uyuni, Coipasa, Pastos Grandes, Capina, Cañapa, Chiguana, and Empexa salt flats.

The Focus on Direct Lithium Extraction

The YLB intends to make Bolivia a major global lithium supplier, targeting an export of 50,000 tons per year of lithium carbonate equivalent. Despite prioritizing Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) for industrial use, experts note that the technology is not yet fully mature for industrial plants.

Ongoing Negotiations

Negotiations began with CBC and Citic Guoan Group for industrial plant installations using DLE technology. However, political instability poses a potential hurdle in contract approvals by the Bolivian legislative assembly.

Community Engagement and Environmental Assessments

Prior to further developments, companies must engage in free and informed community consultations and conduct environmental impact assessments. Success in these areas is necessary for legislative contract approval.
