Enami Shortlists Six Companies for Altoandinos Lithium Project

Enami has shortlisted six companies, including Rio Tinto and POSCO, for the development of the Altoandinos lithium project in Chile’s Atacama Region. The selected companies will negotiate a public-private partnership (PPP) aimed at developing lithium deposits in the Altoandinos salt flats. Enami, traditionally involved in copper processing, is now seeking expertise in lithium production to support this significant endeavor.

Focus on Partnership in Lithium Development

The shortlisted firms, which also include BYD Chile, CNGR Advanced Material, LG Energy Solution, and Eramet Chile, will explore financial and operational support possibilities. Enami launched this partner search in May 2024, aiming for financial investment in exchange for an ownership stake in the project.

Enami’s Strategic Move into Lithium

Enami plans to finalize the PPP by March 2025, designating the selected companies as operators or financiers. Meanwhile, consultation with indigenous communities is ongoing, enhancing collaboration and compliance with local regulations.

Lithium Exploration and Resource Estimation

The basic exploration campaign is set to resume in September 2024, which aims to improve the estimation accuracy of lithium resources in the Altoandinos deposits. This initiative confirms Enami’s commitment to expanding Chile’s role in the global lithium market.
