A Significant Milestone in Lithium Production
Galan Lithium, a trailblazer in the lithium industry, has achieved a significant milestone in its journey from exploration to production. The company has successfully produced a premium quality 6% lithium chloride concentrate product from its Hombre Muerto West (HMW) pilot plant in Argentina. This accomplishment not only validates the viability of its process model and design theories but also sets a new standard in the lithium production industry.
The Breakthrough at HMW Pilot Plant
The HMW pilot plant has confirmed the production of a premium quality, 6% lithium chloride concentrate product. This product is equivalent to 13% Li2O or 31.9% Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE), a measure commonly used in the lithium industry to compare different types of lithium regardless of whether they are in the form of lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, or raw lithium concentrate.
The Journey Towards Continuous Production
This achievement is a testament to the Galan team’s hard work and dedication. The team has been able to overcome the challenges of lithium extraction and processing, demonstrating the effectiveness of their innovative approach. The company has started distributing samples of this product to potential off-take partners, marking a significant step towards becoming a lithium producer.
The pilot plant operations are expected to continue through 2023 and 2024, providing crucial data for further optimizing the HMW project. The next stage of the pilot process aims to achieve continuous production, delivering multiple samples at low and medium scale to meet potential off-takers’ volume requirements.
This continuous production is a critical step in the company’s growth. It not only demonstrates the scalability of Galan’s operations but also ensures a steady supply of lithium to meet the growing demand from various industries, particularly the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors.
Future Plans and Projections
Looking ahead, Galan Lithium has commenced preparations and engineering design for a lithium carbonate pilot plant using the lithium chloride produced at HMW. The company is confident of delivering lithium chloride production of 5.4ktpa LCE in 2025, as outlined in the Phase 1 Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS).
The DFS projects a four-phase approach to building out the HMW and Candelas projects to a final output of 60,000ktpa LCE. The first three phases will concentrate on HMW, while Phase 4 will include LCE from Candelas. The two projects have a combined resource of 7.3Mt at 852mg/l Li, making Galan one of the highest-grade, large-scale resources in the brine-rich Argentina.
Galan Lithium’s successful production of a premium quality 6% lithium chloride concentrate product marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey. With a robust plan for future expansion and a proven process model, Galan is well-positioned to become a leading player in the lithium production industry. The company’s progress underscores the potential of Argentina’s lithium resources and the role they can play in meeting the growing global demand for lithium.
